“Afterschool has helped me as an individual because now I have somewhere to be after school. My mom signed me up. I can come here while she is pre-occupied with work.” - D., 4th Grade OST Participant
The Mercy Family Center of Mercy Neighborhood Ministries of Philadelphia, Inc. provides a comprehensive range of services to the Tioga-Nicetown community. Community members ages 2-105 are served by the Mercy Family Center. Among the vast array of services is a vibrant OST Program for elementary and middle school age children and youth.
Mercy Family Center has been providing OST programming since 1993, when the program was originally held in Holy Souls School. In 2008, the OST Program relocated to the newly renovated Mercy Family Center, which is LEED-certified and known as North Philadelphia’s first “Green” building. Age-appropriate OST programming is offered to all participants, with a particular focus on enrichment in STEM (established with a grant from the National Recreation Foundation) and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math).
M. is a 1st Grade OST Participant at the Mercy Neighborhood Ministries of Philadelphia, Inc. OST Program. An attendee of Mastery Charter School, M. aspires to become a doctor when she grows up. In the afterschool program, she enjoys the opportunity to learn new things, as well as play with toys and color. “My favorite activity here is when a visitor comes and we do projects.”
C. is a 3rd Grade OST Participant who attends Mastery Charter School. Her favorite school subject is mathematics, and her favorite afterschool activity is recess / recreational time. C.'s cousins were participants in the OST Program before she joined in. When C. eventually joined the OST Program herself, she felt quickly at home. She noted that the welcoming atmosphere and the friends she has made while being an OST participant here have been some of her greatest joys. “The part I like about being here is going on the trips.”
D. is a 4th Grade student at Grover Cleveland Mastery Charter School. His favorite subject in school is science. In the afterschool program, D. enjoys technology time with the computers. An OST participant for five years, D. hopes to become a lawyer when he grows up.
Y. is a high school intern from Mastery Charter-Pickett Campus. This is his first year as an intern, and one of his major responsibilities is to help the OST Participants with their homework. In addition to his own responsibilities as a high school student, Y. participates in the internship program at the Mercy Family Center once a week in the afternoon. He thinks OST is important especially because of the homework help that is provided to all OST Participants. Y. notes that some children do not have parents available at home who have the time to help with homework-related questions.
